The San Rafael, California-based company plans to utilize the program’s resources to build what it believes will be the first foundational artificial intelligence model specifically designed to understand and replicate human motion for use in physical rehabilitation.

Through its participation in NVIDIA Connect, Ekso Bionics aims to integrate new AI-driven capabilities across its range of enterprise and personal health devices. The initiative is expected to enhance the company’s ability to deliver innovative solutions that improve mobility and independence for users.

One of its key innovations is the Ekso Indego Personal, a lightweight, powered lower-limb orthosis designed for individuals with mobility impairments. Weighing just 29 pounds (13 kilograms), the exoskeleton is among the lightest commercially available and allows users to walk independently, often during their first session. Its modular quick-connect design enables easy donning and doffing without assistance. The device utilizes motors at the knee and hip joints, combined with intelligent sensors and control systems, to help users with gait impairments stand and walk again—enhancing independence both at home and in the community.

NVIDIA Connect supports select tech companies by providing access to advanced GPU platforms, engineering support, and development kits to speed up innovation and reduce costs. The collaboration is expected to help Ekso Bionics deliver the next generation of AI-powered rehabilitation tools.

In a related milestone, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved a reimbursement rate for the Ekso Indego Personal in April 2024. This decision now allows Medicare beneficiaries with spinal cord injuries access to the groundbreaking technology.
