Amazon's AI-Driven Approach to Brand Protection and Fraud Prevention

Amazon has released its fifth annual Brand Protection Report, showcasing the strides made in combating fraud and counterfeit products using artificial intelligence (AI). In 2024, Amazon invested over $1 billion and hired thousands of new staff members, including machine learning scientists and software developers, to drive innovations in fraud prevention.

The report underscores how AI has become a cornerstone of Amazon’s approach to intellectual property protection. By leveraging AI tools, Amazon has enhanced its proactive controls, enabling automated and scalable detection of counterfeit products and intellectual property infringements. According to the company, these measures blocked over 99% of suspected infringing listings before brands needed to report them.

In 2023, Amazon launched an application programming interface (API) for Amazon Transparency, the company’s product serialization solution. The API streamlines the process for brands to verify their products and track them throughout the supply chain. To date, more than 2.5 billion product units have been verified, with over 88,000 brands enrolled globally.

The report also highlighted the efforts of Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit, which identified, seized, and disposed of more than 15 million counterfeit products worldwide in the past year.

“We are proud of the progress we have made in preventing counterfeits within the Amazon store,” Amazon said in a statement. “This has required significant innovation and perseverance, and it would not be possible without the partnerships we have been able to build with brands, associations, policymakers, law enforcement, and others.”

The company emphasized its commitment to continued advancements and its goal to eliminate counterfeits entirely from its platform.

Amazon’s investment in AI and partnerships is a clear signal of its dedication to protecting consumers and brands. As technology continues to evolve, Amazon remains steadfast in its mission to eradicate counterfeit goods and create a safer shopping experience for all.
